A case alleging that Maldives Transport Authority had unduly awarded the bid to produce machine readable number plates to a third party has been forwarded to Prosecutor General’s Office.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has forwarded a case to PGO on 04th October 2021, alleging that Maldives Transport Authority had unduly awarded the bid to produce machine readable number plates to a third party.

The Maldives Transport Authority issued a request for proposals on December 31, 2019 in order to locate interested parties to manufacture machine-readable number plates. However, a complaint was filed with the ACC stating that the offer was unjustly awarded to Versagio Pvt Ltd, having placed second among the bidders.

Further investigation revealed that the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation's bid committee board members awarded the bid by inspecting the quality and strength of the sample number plates presented, despite the fact that no such requirements were stated in the information sheet published alongside the notice for bids, implying that the board members used their authority to grant Versagio an undue advantage.

Thus, the case has been forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office, requesting the prosecution upon Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation’s bid committee board member Shimaaz Ali, Hamadh Abdul Ghanee, Ali Ikram, Mohamed Nizar Adam, Mariyam Samaahath and Mariyam Thasleema under article 513 (b) of law number 9/2014 (Maldives Penal Code).
